Surgical Robotic Technology - How Far and How Fast

With technology exploding in surgical-assisted devices, we have witnessed sophisticated interventions that have expanded from applications covering image guidance, to minimal invasive, to autonomous interaction. In fact, robotic assisted systems have now been approved by the FDA to support surgeons in procedures such as cutting, suturing, and holding tissue. As the surgeon community progressively accepts the transition of their skills the hospital buyers are finding innovative “mantras” from which to establish market dominance. Meanwhile the top end costs of these systems now rival some of the most expensive equipment bought by hospitals. This panel will discuss the cost/benefit ratio of this technology and how it is being positioned within an ever tightening healthcare budget, further addressing barriers to acceptance to this technology, and finally where the future lies as we springboard into a digital operating room.

Managing & Controlling Physician Preference Items
June 21-23, 2005 at The Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV

The technology driving medical devices (implantable) has led to much debate on its affordability within the health care system and the provider’s ability to establish reproducible quality standards when delivering its intended benefits. With 2nd and 3rd generation complexity and the escalation of costs, the struggle continues in the attempt to control procedure spend. In this workshop we will focus on the issues surrounding medical device technology and the barriers existing between providers and suppliers. We will offer short-term resolutions that will nurture collaborative discussions with the supplier, dismantle current barriers and provide a platform for more effective contracting. We then shift to long-term approaches, providing insight with such models as clinical quality outcomes assessment, sustainable best practices, building physician relations and aligning incentives.

In this interactive workshop you will learn:
--What can be done in the short-term to address the costs of medical devices
--How to build a value proposition through collaboration with your supplier
--What constitutes a fair and equitable local contract for implants
--Steps to breach the economic barriers between buyers and sellers
--Is gain-sharing back on the radar screen
--How to build better relations with your surgeons
--What are the long-term building blocks for the affordable delivery of medical devices

EXCELerating Excellence In All We Do

Group Purchasing Two Years Later:
Two years ago, damaging articles about GPO’s began appearing in The New York Times, suggesting that GPO’s unfairly locked out small manufacturers from the market. Shortly thereafter, hearings commenced before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights. Since then, The General Accounting Office has studied GPO practices, and the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission have both held hearings about the matter. In the wake of all this, how different is group purchasing today, what does that difference mean to your company? Find out from those who know. We’ve invited a Capital Hill staffer to tell us what’s going on in Washington. William McIlhargey will be hosting a panel discussion with presentations from, Scott Farrar, Vice President Contracting at HealthTrust Purchasing Group in Nashville, TN, John Strong, President and CEO of Consorta in Rolling Meadows, Il and Les Popiolek, Vice President of Broadlane in Dallas, TX..
